Painted signs in Dundee’s Ardler Village were designed, supplied and installed for Balgillo Nurseries.

Forward thinking business owners, Pamela Gall and Kim Lee wanted to promote positive messages reflecting the values of their nurseries.

A new sign

Six metres long signs installed on the nursery’s wooden fence face a busy precinct leading to the entrance of a primary school.

A message on an existing painted sign reads Healthy Mind Happy Environment. This six metres length sign was designed, painted and installed as part of a murals project I embarked on in 2019. Pamela and Kim supported the murals project and kindly provided me with two exterior canvases at their Ardler Village and Torridon Road nurseries.

Once the Ardler garden’s perimeter fence was lengthened, Pamela and Kim ordered another painted sign to complement the original sign at the left of the nursery’s entrance.

I created artwork for an illustrative sign inspired by insects. However, Pamela and Kim decided a written message would better communicate the values of Balgillo Nurseries to passers-by.

The newest message reads Learning Through Play.

Painting and lettering the signs

A fun, bright spring colour palette was chosen for the garden environment. Paint colours were mixed to match the original sign’s artwork containing flowers and the nurseries’ mascot, Balgillo Bear.

Scaled artwork transfer patterns were made and three 8′ by 4′ aluminium composite panels were ordered.

The three panels were painted to a high gloss finish before transferring the artwork pattern and hand painting the lettering. Over several days and coats of paint, the lettering and illustrations gradually came to life.

Installing the signs

The three adjoining panels measure approximately seven and a half metres. Each sign fixing was drilled, counter sunk and screwed through the face of the panels before over stickers were applied on top to disguise the screw heads. The over stickers were then painted to the matching background colour.

The positive messages situated next to the primary school attract parent’s attention and promote the nursery’s values. Pamela and Kim were delighted with the result.
