Hand painted graphics at Dundee’s Water’s Edge.

Edinburgh based design studio, Elastic Creative contacted me and asked how to transfer their artwork on to their client’s entrance door.
I visited Water’s Edge in Dundee’s City Quay to survey and along with my quote, I emailed my detailed process for painting their design. The designers approved my quote and supplied their scaled artwork and paint codes.

The sliding door was fabricated with vertical, wooden battens which had recessed grooves every one hundred millimetres. These v-shaped grooves made it difficult for vinyl to remain adequately bonded to the treated wooden surface. Choosing to hand paint the graphics was the most practical and trusted method.

I printed the artwork on transparent acetate and projected the graphic directly onto the door. Intricate swirls were lightly drawn with soft, coloured pencils as well as the lettering near the ground. Amendments were made to enable painting the recesses, then we were ready to paint.

The graphic was painted steadily over two days. Brushing too much paint would cause runs in the recesses. Carefully filling inside the penciled lines eventually materialised the whole swirling graphic.
Once dry, the entire design was painted again. A second coat made the grey solid. The lettering at the bottom left was tricky as this required lying horizontally on the ground. Two coats were also carefully painted to make the white solid.
Elastic Creative were delighted with the outcome.
